Not true. In Iowa and around the Midwest (bluegrass), you have a better chance of getting grass to survive if you plant it in the fall due to the heat, lack of rain and stress of the possibility of being mowed too early (which yes, can be controlled). If you plant the grass in September, you're going to get these 65 degree temps at night you speak of, you're going to get rain, you won't get high temperatures and it will be mature by the time frost comes. Also there's a greater chance of the young grass getting choked out by weeds in the spring.

Yes, you can get grass to grow in the spring... but it's a safer bet in the fall.

What kind of grass is it? For St. Augustine, I like adding compost and topsoil.
