Does anyone have a good way to prevent bugs from eating brassicas? Two days after I transplant my cabbage and broccoli to the garden, they are 50% gone with little holes all over them. I would try sevin or whatever but that's good until the next rain washes it off and you're only suppose to put it on four times a season. I used to be Mr. Organic but this is war now so I'll throw anything on them that works. Appreciate any advice.
Does sound like slugs. I have had a lot of success against slugs and snails using garlic oil sprayed onto the plants. You can also try planting garlic in amongst your brassicas.
I don't think it is slugs although we do occasionally get some here in South Dakota - too hot and dry usually. These are more like small holes all over the leaves. I'm thinking it's a bug of some sort but maybe garlic oil would work as well. Anybody have this issue in the Midwest and found a solution?
Sounds like it could be earwigs. Do you have them in your neck of the woods.

If it is cabbage butterflies -- you can tell because they do their mating dance right over the plants -- you can keep them out by surrounding the plants with fine mesh that will keep them from laying eggs on the plants in the first place. This photo looks like they used chicken wire but you'd need something finer, like mosquito netting:
