This wiki link has excellent information and illustrations about planting garlic as well as questions & answers at the end of the instructions:

My personal preference is for hard necked garlics instead of soft necked garlics. Hard necked garlic bulbs grow bigger, they have nicer and more buttery hot flavor with no bitterness, and they last longer in storage after they're harvested. My favourite hard necked garlic is the Russian Red garlic which produces very large garlic heads.

You do not peel the individual garlic cloves before you plant them. If you peel them they will rot in the soil.

I've grown garlic in containers but they need fairly big containers and I've found they still don't grow as well or as big as those planted directly in the ground.
