so i moved into a house recently where the previous owner stopped caring for the yard for a while. so some parts have a decent amount of grass and some have no grass. all of it has a lot of weeds. i had a few grass guys come over to tell me how to make it into a magnificent yard of lush beautiful grass. one guy suggested "burning" the existing vegetation and then i seeding everything to basically start from scratch. i checked his web site and it mentions that they will apply round up to the entire yard.
now, i am not mr natural organic or anything close to that but it seems like a lot to apply it to my entire yard. is this something that you would feel comfortable doing?
The gist of the academic literature is that Round-Up is at most of low toxicity to animals, birds, and fish. And there's no question of its effectiveness versus growing plant life. We did two applications about a week apart to reclaim 200 sqft of long-time weed beds to actual lawn. We didn't notice any side effects or repercussions.
Informed individuals know all about the recent news of Round Up. Causes cancer, destroys Mother Nature. It's effing POISON.
Yet there’s no proof of any of that, just a bunch of “maybes”.
FWIW, I sprayed a 30’x40’ area of lawn with roundup a few days ago, I’m planting trees on it and covering the soil with leaves and pine needles. I’m slowly decreasing my lawn area every year.
I RoundUpped a portion of my back yard several years ago after removing some awful mulch, dead bushes, and weeds in the area. I subsequently tilled and reseeded the area and now have a nice lush area of lawn instead. The RoundUp did not prevent the germination of the new grass seed at all, since I left a little time between its application and the reseeding. Oh, and no signs of cancer so far either.

Well if you get cancer, it will probably be caused by your cellphone, not the Round-Up.
All the frogs have already succumbed to chytridiomycosis. Round-Up is meanwhile minimally toxic to animals, birds, and fish, and it isn't used as an alternative to a lawn mower. It's used to clear all vegetation to the root so that it will not be able to grow back again. It is quite effective at this. It adheres well to soil (i.e., minimal run-off) and is easily degraded by naturally occurring microbes.
Sorry to be a broken record, but the way RoundUp kills is to block one particular enzyme that is only found in seed plants. That is why it is so useful. You can kill tender vegetation, leave insects and animals alone, and even keep the microorganisms in the soil happy. And, it does not stay in the environment very long.
