DC Metro Area: How long will it take tall fescue grass seed to germinate? It is done by landscaping company, and I was told no worry about watering (since it rains often during this season), but I do water once when it does not rain.
Attached: It has been four and half weeks. Only a small portion of lawn has grass, and I have use trimmer to cut it down a little bit last Friday. BUT there are quite many grass seeds sitting on the soil, not covered by the soil, I guess that could be the reason not germinate.
I just planted a new lawn 5 weeks ago. I had to water it 5 times a day 10 minutes each time to keep it (seed bed) wet! I've already mowed it twice a week apart to 3", and it looks like a golf course.
IF you didn't water a MINIMUM of 3 times a day, that's what you get, a lawn that's failed to germinate.
You can NOT allow the grass seed to dry out, nor to heat up to around 130 degrees due to high temps which cause high temps in the soil.

I don't mind if it germinates at a later time, but my concern is if it will germinates. Landscape company told me not to worry about watering. There is no high temps.
It is not I don't want to water the lawn, I am quite busy and leave home early in the morning and get home late.

It's my opinion that your seed is now dead, and it will NOT germinate after this amount of time.
You MUST have the ground scratched back up, and new seed planted. I highly recommend hydroseeding. In our area, it only costs about .10 cents per square foot.
I don't know much about temps in the Dc metro area, but it might now be too late in the season for you to do anything until Spring.
Frost dates used at the National Arboretum in downtown DC are April 23 and October 17. We've dipped into the 30's overnight a couple of times here lately.

Well, looks like you got Oregon seed that likes wet and cool
You got hot and dry weather
We live in Oregon and our seed is visibly green 12 days (today) after planting.
your seed may have sprouted and died. You may have to reseed, See your people.
Looks like that wasn't watered. With grass seed, you have to water multiple times a day for several minutes like 20-30. A sprinkling of 5 minutes does nothing for seed. You need to water it every day....religiously!
