Even though it is cheap, I don't want to buy it every year (if it cannot stand winter weather), and it also takes time to go to home depot and get a new one if you need to use it. I will use it occasionally every year.
I have had a similar bucket for years and it's nor had a problem with cold weather. DC occasionally get temps down near zero, so don't use it for anything during those times. The chances of cracking go up as the plastic becomes more brittle.
We always have salt in one of our five gallon buckets sitting in the cold. We have never had any problems; even when hammering on the slat to break it up. Like others have said; freezing ice is the hardest on almost any container - even concrete. Sometimes people will have plants outside that have too much water in the soil and that can expand and crack the containers.
We have one 30 gallon plastic drum that sits at the top of our driveway with salt in it. That has been out in the elements for over ten years without problems.
