This was a very driven and dedicated gardener who left his mark on future generations of gardeners.

He was a charismatic, indefatigable, idiosyncratic aristocratic English nut job who inspired probably thousands of young people to cultivate the soil. I met him a couple or three times back when he was doing his thing. Practical reality was not his strong suit but it wasn't most people's then.

I was an apprentice at one of the gardens he founded at UC Santa Cruz, back in 1977.

What an incredible opportunity for you^^^^^^.He sounds like a very complex man with a determination and vision few have. I have been double digging for many years and swear by it too but it is next to impossible in the clay soil I've lived with most of my gardening life. I can't garden now but I have my gardeners single dig and combine that with raised beds to ensure maximum drainage. This has worked for me.
