I agree, that's mice have done that. You need to put down mouse traps otherwise they'll chew what remains of that rose and other plants down to soil level.

One year I had a couple of potted rose plants, some jewel orchids and a bonsai myrtle tree I had brought indoors to the bay window of a guest bedroom for the winter. They were okay there for the first 2 weeks and then were all chewed down to the crowns inside of a week, between waterings, by mice that had chewed a tiny entry hole in the wall.

I put out a glue trap last night with peanut butter as bait--empty this morning. Going to get a larger glue trap and see if I catch anything in that. I didn't know that mice would chew on plants. Always thought they liked food tidbits.
