You don't want any kind of bamboo....clumping bamboo is what you want, and these folks are in Texas.

I live on Long Island & have the 'clumping' variety planted near a small pond in my backyard. I purchased at the end of the summer one year & thought I would just keep an eye on it to ensure it wasn't becoming a nuisance. I'm very happy to say it hasn't, even several years later, it spreads but very very slowly (likely in inches/year) & I like the way it looks & the way the wind sounds when rustling through it, it's very nice.

I live in PA and had been thinking about bamboo for erosion control on my hillside. My local nursery wanted $50 each. I found a place online called Bamboo Garden Nursery and was able to get the small trees for $20 each. They are also the clumping bamboo. I've heard horror stories about the running bamboo. I just planted four of them in the Fall and if they survived this crazy winter, I'll be ordering more in the Spring.
