Wow! I went to view some Phlox plants at some mail-order companies, and was astounded at the price per plants, sometimes they are shipping ROOTS that never grow, and astounding shipping costs. I realize that many corporations have taken over many small family garden businesses, and increasing the costs, to the point that I may have to give up gardening.
I went to view one and looked at a Phlox for $16.95 plus $10 shipping costs for a very, very small plant. That brings the total to $26.95, for one little plant. Now, many of them are selling you the roots at a little less money, however, many of these roots do not grow. Last year, I lost ten of them. Then, these companies want pictures of the plant before and after, it was planted, and they give you a hard time to replace them, like Wayside
Farms. After going through all of the above, they sent me two roots, and those died also.
