Hi:

I had beautiful 25 year old trimmed (3-4 x's a year) ivy growing on and completely covering my fence. The fence fell down this winter. The ivy had to be fully cut back to just above the ground. There are about 7 stumps left. I'm trying to figure out how long it will take to grow back and cover the new fence which is 8' high and 42' long.

Also, I was thinking about using Bandini Pro Choice 15 15 15 as a fertilizer so the vines will grow back faster. I'm worried about using too much in a single does or using it too often (monthly or bi-weekly).

I have photos but don't see how to attach them. The old ivy is green year round. Can you tell me what kind of ivy it is and how to get it to grow back quickly? There are only a few green leaves left. The rest are stumps and old dead branches ... but stumps and roots are undisturbed.

I think it's English ivy, which many people hate but I love it ... if it's cut back and trimmed 3-4 times per/yr

Thanks for your time.

If it's English ivy it will take 3 to 4 years (depending on your climate and length of growing season). If you live in a cold climate with a very short growing season it will take longer, maybe more like 6 - 7 years.

English ivy is terribly invasive - kill it with fire!

"Hedera helix is an aggressive invader threatening all levels of forested and open areas, growing along the ground as well as into the forest canopy. Vines climb up tree trunks and envelop branches and twigs, blocking sunlight from the host tree’s foliage, impeding photosynthesis. An infested tree will exhibit decline for years before it dies. The weight of vines also makes trees susceptible to blowing over in storms. This plant has been confirmed as a reservoir for bacterial leaf scorch (Xylella fastidiosa), which affects a wide variety of trees."

OP - do you trim the bacteria, too?

I'm not a big ivy fan. I hope that replacement fence is really sturdy or the ivy will pull that one down, too.

If you really want it to grow, make sure it gets the right amount of water and buy yourself a bag of time release 10 10 10 fertilizer with trace mineral. Toss some of the fertilizer on it every couple of months.
