That's what I was thinking too. If not, it's a good imitation of one.

There are several varieties, even dwarf ones. This is in China however so who the heck knows for sure? They are of course native to the SE U.S. so chances are this being in China, it's probably not a magnolia but something that looks similar.

Magnolias (and some camellias) are native to Asia too. There's over 200 native species of magnolias that have their natural origins from several countries around the world, the majority of them are from Asia. And that's not including the countless new hybrids that botanists have introduced. The leaves of all magnolias don't all look identical to each other of course, nor do all the blossoms. Some of the magnolias that grow wild in China are listed as invasive weeds in China. The quote below shows where magnolias have their distribution:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnolia

" ....... The natural range of Magnolia species is a disjunct distribution, with a main centre in east and southeast Asia and a secondary centre in eastern North America, Central America, the West Indies, and some species in South America. ....."

In many peoples' gardens or nurseries here in the PNW we see lots of different species of magnolias of Asian origin that thrive in our PNW/BC climates because it's so similar to the climates of China and Japan. Japanese magnolias are particular favourites apparently. Many have leaves that look the same as the one pictured. I'm taking a guess that the photograph above was taken of a Japanese specimen in the beautiful Chengdu Botanical Gardens in China.

It looks kind of like a rhododendron, but the leaves look too smooth. I don't think it's a magnolia for the same reason. It almost looks like a succulent.
