I have decided to theme a few of my apple trees, since I am not making cider or growing these varieties commercially I decided to create a few family apple trees (trees that are related in term of parentage).

My plan is to use a dwarfing rootstock (G41) stake it and prune it into a 4 arm goblet shop that divides once, thus giving me 8 arms, so I can easily host 8 varieties. The idea is delight the palate with the commonality of the family and yet explore the intricacies of each variety. I do realize I will get 6-10 pieces of fruit per variety this way. I already a lot of M27 cordons and a couple horizontal cordons and just thought a few small trees would work well in the landscape.

Onn of them I am planning the Snow/McIntosh clan. Starting with the progenitor Snow. So:

01) Fameuse/Snow apple (Progenitor)
02) McIntosh (Likely Fameuse x Detroit Red (speculated))
03) Macoun (McIntosh x Jersey Black)
04) Spencer (McIntosh x Golden Delicious)
05) Cortland (Ben Davis x McIntosh)
06) Empire (McIntosh x Delicious)
07) Fireside (McIntosh x Longfield)
08) Milton (Yellow Transparent x McIntosh)

I am not sure Lobo is distinctive enough to warrant its own branch.

Anyone have another McIntosh clan apple they think is better than the selections above. I am trying to keep it to 1st generation offspring of McIntosh or Snow(not sure why)? Any reason I would not want these varieties?

I thought of doing a disease resistant McIntosh family tree(obviously most would be more distant relatives) with:

I am also planning Cox family apples and Golden Delicious family apples.
