It was here when I moved in. Last year it set mini fruits that disappeared, eaten by birds or fallen off. This year it's set 3x the fruit and it's bigger and hanging in there so far. I'm going to try and post pictures - the tree has red leaves.
NYC refugee - regarding the mini fruits it set last year, did you try to taste any, did you open any of them up to see what kind of seeds they had inside? If so, please describe the seeds.
I've never seen anything quite like that before. I do know it's definitely not apple of any kind since there is no such thing as apples with fuzzy skins and big blossom ends like that. It does look like some kind of hybrid peach (possibly even a hybrid apricot). If it's a peach my guess is it's a hybrid cross between two unique varieties - maybe dwarf Bonfire (purple leaves) X dwarf Saturn aka Donut peach (small, fuzzy, flattened donut shaped fruits).
The other possibility is a red leaved variety of loquat. Loquats are small with fuzzy skin and big blossom ends like that but I haven't seen them with the flattened (donut shaped) fruits like that. If it's a loquat perhaps the fruits plump up and round out more as they become riper?
I hope somebody can give you a knowledgeable positive ID on it, my curiosity about it is killing my cat.
I've never gotten a fruit large enough to taste. They were gone before this size last year and while some are larger this year, they don't look ripe enough to want to taste. But taking a look at the pit is a really good idea and I'll let you know when I get one - it's pouring right now, so we'll have to wait.
Since it's done better each of the three summers I've been here, I was wondering if fruit trees have to reach a certain age to bear edible fruit. I tried looking this all up and it might be an ornamental, for the red leaves and beautiful pink blossoms, which would be a bit of a shame.

Yes, they do. And then the crops are fairly light for the first few years. And then they really get going!
