Sweet woodruff is another great ground cover for shady and cool areas. It grows about 2-3 inches tall, and spreads like crazy. It has little white flowers on it for a while, but mostly it's green. Easy to grow from seeds, too.

I was seed catalog browsing recently and these looked like a fun ground cover to me. http://www.seedsavers.org/prodinfo.asp?number=1225 (broken link)

I hope you are enjoying your new home.

Elston,

You got lots of nice suggestions! I believe there is no such thing as too many violets--my very favorites! and the Sweet woodruff idea is a wonderful one; the scent is so lovely and fresh, and it's a pretty plant. I believe it is used in May wine.

Crown vetch is very invasive and I do not think native to Maine (perhaps not even to US) Place it has been used--it crowds out native species, etc.

Happy gardening!

I love the idea of sweet woodruff; which I know as the flavoring for May Wine. I hope I do find seed or plantlets.

Today we got serious and marked out paths and gardens and planted 6 day lilies, 4 blue berry bushes, two lilacs, another peony; 12 vinca major; a colombine and a bleeding heart, and have two rose bushes and a couple of dianthus carnation plants ready to go (my late sister's name was Diantha.....so the Dianthus are very emotionally laden for me.)

I am not using Crown Vetch....I promise!
