Removing a bird's nest (yard, cats, shade, neighbor)

I was so disappointed when the Oriole parents abandoned the nest they built on top of the wreath on my front door. We had a bad hail storm about ten days ago, and they never came back to the nest. I have seen a pair of Orioles in the back yard so I am hoping this is the pair, and nothing happened to the parents of these four beautiful bright blue eggs I have.

This is the most amazing nest. It is secured somehow to the wreath, until I have been unable to dislodge it, without running a risk of destroying it, I'm afraid. I wanted to carry it over to the elementary school for one of the teachers who does quite a bit of Nature study. I am not sure what to do with the four little eggs. Too bad I didn't catch it earlier, or I might have found someone who could have hatched them.

Glad to hear you got your front door back. My baby birds fledged a long time ago. The mother bird tried to rebuild, but we were able to shoo her away. My husband keeps promising to put netting over the vine that covers the pergola, but hasn't. Meanwhile, my toddler keeps a vigilant eye out for any birds that might try to move in. I did discover one good thing about all of the birds. Our neighbor's cherry tree seems to be picked pretty clean by those birds, so I haven't had too much yard clean-up to do.

I actually just took down my wreath and "cleaned" the door. I am going to leave a wreath off the door for now, as to not to encourage any further nesting. Your toddler sounds like quite the little sentry! Very sweet!

That is too bad. I am surprised that they abadoned it. Unless, as you mentioned something happened to them. My mother Robin used mud mixed with her grass. I swear, when I was just cleaning it up, it was like concrete! LOL! I tried to pry the empty nest from the wreath, but it would not come off, so I ended up throwing the wreath away. She definitely built it to last.

We've got a robin nesting on the rose trellis by our front door. She certainly picked a great location -- out of my reach, and those rose thorns will deter any nest raider.

We discovered we can't the front door open, or the cats will sit at the front door and meow at the poor robin, which leaves her a nervous wreck. We're not even using the front door until the babies are able to leave the nest.

Well, I think the starlings have moved to a nearby pine. I saw them taking bits and pieces out of the pipe and flying to the tree. Plus, I didn't hear them bouncing around in the pipe when I was outside today. Kind of glad they moved since the nest was close to the finches and I really didn't want my downspout clogged up ... more rain on the way!

We have two bird nests in the eaves of the front of our house. I think they're chickadees. Between our house and our neighbors trees across the street these birds(some are gold finches) fly back and forth and chirp all morning long. I've kept the nests up there for two reasons- 1. I'm a sucker for animals so I could never destroy their nests and 2. It's the best eye candy for my cat that I could ever ask for! He just lays over the edge of the couch arm for hours watching these birds fly and flutter back and forth, chattering along with them. It's so hysterical, he just loves it. The nests can be a little messy and I have to sweep often, but it's so worth it.

If I remove the nest after the chicks have hatched, where will they go? Where will they sleep? They are hatched and flying but I don't want to leave them homeless! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mitzy

I hope you'll leave the babies alone until they're old enough to leave on their own. It's a small inconvenience in the big picture of life...

I have a nest built on top of a window ledge right by my deck. Now there's a couple of babies in it.

I'm new to the area so I'm not sure what kind of bird it is but they make their nest with a lot of moss. I've never seen a nest like it. I don't understand how she glued it to the house - the nest is much wider than the window trim.

I'm glad she built her nest here!

I'm a bird lover and my husband is NOT because he is a born and raised farmer, having a different outlook on birds, barn cats, etc. Having said all of that, we always get, what my husband calls, "barn swallows" building nests in the corners of our open front porch (inside). My husband keeps busy removing the nests before the nest is completely built. Without fail, the birds re-build them. This goes on all summer long, and they always come back. I didn't think my husband has ever removed the nests with eggs in them (although in my heart, I know he certainly would). So, birds come back.....but, I can't speak for eggs, new borns, etc.

There is one bird nest outside my den window, on the sill. My husband doesn't know about that one, and I don't know what kind of birds they are. So, that's my little secret.

It seems like the OP's children would really enjoy learning about the birds while they are there. Instead of removing the nest, it could be an opportunity to teach her children about birds and respecting nature....

Children are naturally curious.

They could get a book about birds and figure out what kind of bird it is. And, talk about eggs... and how the mother bird takes care of them...

It could be a learning experience for everyone!
