Due to circumstances beyond my control, the lawn got away from me this year as I could not fertilize and weed it as usual.
The creeping charlie is really creeping!
I would like to try a weed service company, BUT do they only sell service PLANS in which they come out several times a year?
I just need a control visit of maybe just 1 -2 service calls to get it back into shape.
Go to a local privately owned nursery and ask for a good chemical to kill your weeds over the winter.
Then ask them when you should apply your preemergent in the spring, they will know. Don't forget to buy it then, or buy it now for then in advance. Timing is everything, you know that.
Good Luck. Stay away from Tru Green, trust me on this one.
Two of my neighbors use Tru-Green. When I asked, they never did a soil test. In my area, the soil is calcium deficient. Without it and lime, fertilizing is useless. If you know what you want to do, you might be able to find a seasonal yard service to do the work on an as needed basis. As noted above, your local nursery might know what to put down and might have knowledge of people who might do it on a one or two time basis. Also, some of the neighborhood websites might have some listings.
Thank you both.
I'm going to ask some neighbors for suggestions too.
I know WHAT to do myself, but just don't have the TIME to do so now.
Do you have a local county extension agent? I'm pretty sure you do. If you contact them, they may have a program similar to the onw we have, the "Smart Green Lawn Program". For a fee of $45, Master Gardeners take soil samples, photographs, and measure your lawn and all of the existing structures. The soil samples are sent to VA Tech for analysis. Then the Master Gardeners provide a report to the homeowner which indicates what kinds of weeds they have present; what kinds of soil improvements need to be made (i.e. lime, fertilizer, etc.) and when. Also, we're always willing to recommend appropriate plants, shrubs and trees even if they're not part of the lawn program, because that's what we're about, lol.
