Reel push mowers
Do any of ya'll use them with your Bermuda grass? I was told recently that those type of mowers were perfect for Bermuda because it cuts the grass at a nice short length, giving a golf course appearance.

We have one...we have one spot in the yard that we've been able to get bermuda to grow. And I love walking on it barefoot after it's been mowed with the reel mower. Nice and soft....

We have one and I thought my husband was crazy when he first purchased it vs a gas mower.
However, the results have been amazing. Many of our neighbors have commented on how lush and green our yard looks. Not to mention it is a good workout for him!
The trick according to my husband, is the push reel mower and when you cut it. He says the gas mower cuts the grass too short. It has nothing to do with fertilizer.
Whatever his method is, I quit teasing him because it looks like a golf course and admit I have minimal knowledge on the subject.
He wins.

Thank you for the replies. Have either of you experienced issues with keeping the blades in alignment? My dad said that was a problem with the reel mowers, and it was a pain to fix it. It has been many, many, years since he has used one, in fact I don't even remember seeing him use one at all. Maybe the newer ones don't have that issue?

No issues, we've had ours for approx 1 yr.
I think it's important to mention that if we did begin to have problems like you described, we would take it back to SEARS and inquire about the warranty. Worst case scenario, we would buy another one because compared to gas mower, the reel is significantly less $.

We have one that I'm pretty sure is antique...it was left in the garage when we bought the house. We don't use it, but have on occasion and it works well, just needs to be sharpened.

Reel mowers are making a big comeback. They are great for southern grasses like bermuda, do not emit greenhouse gases that account for up to 5% of the U.S. air pollution, and are now even coming as battery-powered (http://www2.yardiac.com/long.asp?item_id=3215 - broken link). The best maker is probably Brill, which is also marketed under the "Gardena" brand.
