I was looking at pictures of the Netherlands, and I wondered about their land reclaimed from the sea.

Isn't there a large amount of residual salt in that situation, and thus be unfit to grow anything?

No doubt the Dutch have spent many decades of effort neutralizing the salt in those soils. Planting and then harvesting rotations of salt tolerant crops would help remove it.
