It is about that time...17 years in the making.

Brood X is coming to a tree near you...very soon.

Not one, but millions per acre.

Most of the states impacted: Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia

Have you spotted your first Brood X yet?

I've kept an ear out, but I haven't heard them yet. I'm in New York, so maybe they haven't emerged quite yet.

Was doing some planting about a week ago and they were already crawling several inches down in the soil.

I haven't heard them but I have seen several in soil when digging around in my garden for my vegetable plantings.

If you are really interested, consider loading the Citizen Science reporting and tracking smartphone app Cicada Safari.

It has been a while since I've had them buzzing near me and I have lived in Northern VA my entire adult life. No brood has been as strong as the wicked ones in the 1980's. I lived in Manassas 17 years ago and Vienna before that. I am in Lakeridge now and suspect I am going to dodge them again. Not every area will get them. What a pain if you do live where they swarm. Get ready for clicking dog teeth, lol. Even they get ticked off by them.

No sighting as of today, but with temps going to 85’ twice over the next couple of days, it’s going to be very soon.

While it’s fun to get worked up about these guys there are very few locations they are expected. In NC for example only three counties far to the east are probable sites.

I remember the little darlings from last time, I was in Culpeper County. Now I'm in SW Va.
Maybe they'll skip here.

I grew up Northern Va and remember the last two times they came out. I also thought we wouldn't see them here in Central NC, but my wife has seen some cicada larvae in our back yard over the last week or so. Maybe we will get some? Hopefully not too bad.
