So far, he only has a shallow hole going below the house into the crawl space, just big enough to put his body through. I checked the crawl space yesterday and didn't see him in there or any damage but I'll try some deterrents at his entrance. Maybe a combination of irish spring soap shavings and cayenne pepper. I don't want to plug up his entrance at this time because I don't want him stuck under there and digging another exit hole.
BTW, a few weeks ago, I saw one across the street in the neighbors yard. I'm not sure if it's the same guy or if there are several of them living in the neighborhood.
you won't see damage in the crawlspace.
it's the burrows which cause the damage, and you won't see the burrows. they are underground.
it is their nature to burrow. and burrow and burrow and burrow. not to just get to a space (i.e. your crawlspace) and stay there
I waged a war on garden voles. They tunnel and eat the roots of plants. We had a dozen shrubs in front of the house. I pull in to the house and notice that three of them are leaning over. Like they were tipped over. But they're planted, established shrubs, that would cost $60 a piece. I walk over, and lift them up. They may as well have been cut flowers, shorn off an inch below the surface. $180 dinner. I told the wife that I wasn't replacing them with anything expensive, of course the cheap stuff I replaced them with remains untouched, and I'll admit, is pretty hardy.
Thats awesome what the guy did!! I had a family of raccoons living in an old barn years ago, they were living in the attic area, I would put dog food out for them daily, they didnt bother me living there, live and let live I say.
I’ve got one living under my wood shed. It likes to eat the dandelions in the lawn, so I have no problems with it. My barn cat try’s to stalk it but it never gets close enough to pounce. The neighbors hound dogs chase it but it’s a smart old Chuck, it hears them coming and runs under the shed. So far, it’s managed to live two years in my yard, I wish it luck.
I blame them for the damage done to the wiring, & hoses on my cars. I chased one on the driveway and he ran up under the hood of my truck. I opened the hood and he ran up under my car. I harrassed him quite a while before he finally ran to the woods. Obviously the cavities and recesses of a car body are familiar to him. Every car left out has suffered damage. A lot of the damage has been under the car at just the right height for a ground hog standing on the ground. Some has been under the hood. I've set live traps but I always catch something else. Mostly I just repair the damage and hope it doesn't happen again, but it happens again. We've seen a few hit on the road. They seem to have always produced replacements.
