Last year we tried growing swiss chard. They too were eaten and full of holes. We put some in a tub of water and we found small worms were eating the chard. Don't know what type of worm it was, but there were so many, it turned us off so much we didn't eat the chard. These worms also ate the green beans leafs and other things. We've been growing veggies for years and never had this problem until now.
It's probably slugs. There's a product called Sluggo that works well, or put a little container of beer nearby..the slugs will be attracted to it, get drunk, and drown.
You can also try spraying them with a mix of water and dishsoap-about a teaspoon to a gallon, I was told. I have heard that beer suggestion before too-think I'll try both! Drunken slugs, yeah that sounds familiar.
Check for cutworms or cabbage lopers. BT, bacillus thuringensis is the product that is organically safe to use. It comes in either a liquid for spraying, or in a dust/powder form for dusting your plants. It's 100% effective. Get it at garden centers.
