Karla, I'm betting it was some kind of root problem -- a fungus, maybe? Three plants out of about eight or nine were affected, and when I tugged on them they had very few roots. These were established plants, too. So up they came; hopefully it won't spread to the others, although I'm not very hopeful.

It is possible you are overwatering them. Ours grow out in the baking sun and we have never watered them. We chose them for a bed out by the road where we do not have access to a hose.
As someone said, the rudbeckia look a lot like the echinacias (sp?) which come in other colors besides yellow, like pink and lavender.

gentlearts is right about the watering. I seldom water mine and they are in full sun to.
