Why are the mums I planted covered in buds but none are opening?

Not sure what area of the country you are...but Mums usually open in the mid to late fall.. Having said that.. I have Mums that are in full bloom by the beginning of August...some in late Aug. and now the rest have buds and will open in late Sept. when they are suppose to!! I've even had some bloom so late, that they get snowed on But I could get snow in October!!!
If yours have buds, be patient...they'll bloom!

Depends on the mum itself. Some just open earlier than others. Have faith.
I pinch mine back until about mid-July to make them bushier and have more flowers -- and to stall their flowering; otherwise, they'd bloom at the end of July. And then I try to be vigilant about deadheading them so I get blooms through November.

Different varieties of mums are different bloom times. Are they in full shade - if so, that could be a problem. I had some asters that I had to relocate into full sun from semi-shade otherwise they never opened.

Depends on the amount of sun. Miracle-gro or Bloom Plus will push out those flowers quickly if there is sufficent sun and you don't over water.

According to the nursery where I buy my mums every year (to give away, not to plant--I have too many already!) there are early, mid and late-blooming varieties to chose from. I also pinch back, 3 times before mid-July actually, and experimented with not pinching back as heavily. As it turns out, the ones that I pinched back most severely (enough to start new plants from!) are doing the best, are now are huge and bushy with TONS of buds. Only one of mine is in bloom right now (must be an early one!)
