At one time, I was planning to move to Scottsdale, Arizona, from NYC, and I finally decided not to move because I could not leave my peonies behind. There are agriculture stations in all highways that will not allow anyone to pass with a seed!

I planted peony bushes in the spring. They came up but didn't bloom and nor did they grow very much. Does it take a few years for them to bloom? Should I cut them back before the first frost?

Peonies may take a couple of years to produce blooms. Maybe next year you'll get a couple.

Peonies are not an instant gratification plant. They take years to become full and bloom well. They will live for decades. Patience.

Thanks at least now I know it is normal. Will they benefit from a trimming now or should I just leave them alone?

When I lived in Brooklyn NY, my gradmother had about 6 peonies. It had to be about 40 years old. It was about 3 feet in diameter and would get dozens of softball size blooms in June. At first frost it would be cut to ground level. In the spring we gave it a good dose of bone meal. Some of the younger plants were smaller and got less than a dozen blooms.

Next spring after they get about six inches tall. I put 1/2 cup of epsom salts and 1/4 cup of sugar right around the base of the stalks. It sure seems to make the flowers bigger and fuller. I know this because I had two different spots where they grew. On both sides of the yard. One year I did this to one side only. That side wasn't near as good looking/growing. The next year I did this to the opposite side and treated the one that didn't get it last year. Same results. Then both sites got it. From then on.

I live in Zone 9 (Florida) and decided to buy a peony plant to bring home and try my best to grow it. It is about 2 feet tall and has a seed pod on one stem which gardener advised me to remove from the stem. I realize odds are heavily against the successful growing of a peony in this climate, but I felt compelled to try. I think the blooms are the most audacious I've ever seen. If you are knowledgeable about how I might do something to increase the odds of success with my peony, I'd certainly appreciate your help.
