I wS'ed Shastas in 2007, planted out, and they did not survive. I sowed the last of my seeds in the summer of 2008... just basically dumped all the seeds in some soil in one of those 5qt ice cream containers... and they germinated. SO, now they are in the ground, close to my garage.. but certainly not protected ... i mulched them a lil bit with grass and leaf clippings... and i'm just hoping for the best.
If they dont come back next year... i'm done with them.
>>I think those are blanket flowers and red bee balm.
actually, that looks more like Autumn Colors Rudbeckia than Gaillardia...
My other PC jsut freed up... I'll find a image of my Blanket Flower, and i may have a single bloom of the Autumn Colors as a comparision.l
That's the Autumn colors I'm thinking of. I had one plant this summer. It did really well for about a month. I purchased it. It made it through July and in early August, it just started wilting. It didn't need water. Next thing I know, it's covered with pill bugs. Same thing happened to my compact Rudbeckia. I know there's another similar rudbeckia. Aren't they all related?
I know I shouldn't, but I almost made a West Virginia joke.
I think that some Rudbeckia and ConeFlowers Echinacea are related.... but i dont think Rudbeckia and Gaillardia are... I found one image that has both in it... I'll be posting it as soon as i upload it.
But -- i believe it's Autumn Summer and Indian Blanket Gaillardia. at least, those are what the seed packs stated.

Ah. I THINK I ordered both of those this fall. I hate seed packs that don't have pictures and aren't labeled with any sort of common name. LOL
looking more closely, yours are not Autumn Colors... but I'm pretty sure it's Rudbeckia, and not Gaillardia... I'll track it down, and post a link when i find it....
here are my Indian Blanket Gaillardia in the background, and the Rudbeckia in the foreground. At first i was thinking it was Hirta - but i'm not positive... the BES were a first year bloomer though.
AH -- I just remembered... mine are Gloriosa Daisy [Rudbeckia gloriosa] the ones with the red in the middle

Mine may have been Rudbeckia Cappuccino. Orange and brown was the primary coloring.
I too was thinking Cappuccino ... saw it in the "Parks" site. Though the colors are just off a bit.
Did you buy this as a plant, or seeds?
and regarding your ConeFlowers... how long have you had them, that you only had 1 bloom?
they are traditionally a second year bloomer. I grew some Eastern Coneflower by seed in 2007, and got 1 flower my first year... this year they bloomed like crazy. I also purchased WHite Swan, which i heard was a first year bloomer, and got 2 flowers. so i am hoping for a lot more next year.
I'm also getting a bunch more varieties in this swap i'm in... I plan to get them going early, in hopes of getting a bloom or two on them.

It was a plant. It came from a nursery in Delaware during a road trip. The label said Autumn colors.
I had three sprout from seed. One plant put out a single bloom this year. The other two put out HUGE leaves, but no stalk or flowers.
I've got the Park collection for both Shastas and Echinacea. I'm hoping to see a few flowers this year. And maybe lots more from my other plants. I need to move them in the spring to a sunnier spot.
I got white swan in a trade, just after I ordered some. It was a "bonus". I also got a huge envie of TN coneflower. I believe they're endangered. I plan to grow them away from all the others.
OH -- another thing... i tend to only grow plants that are suitable for Xeriscaping. I do not water back where i plant... though when most are seedlings still, i may drag the hose back there... though it does not reach .... the bed is about 150' from my spigot.
so the Echinacea, Gaillardia, and Rudbeckia are all drought tolerant, though you and I have pretty different growing conditions, i'm sure.
Back to the Autumn Colors ... it really does seem that they have varying amounts of red in them... i located this image on a site ... and none of the blooms on the same plant have the same look. http://www.daytonnursery.com/Encyclo...s%27%20ivy.JPG
I do not have seeds of this plant... so i can't test this theory.
btw -- has anyone attempted to grow Dianthus Microchip from gathered seeds?
I had purchased a pack a couple of years ago, and only gathered seeds this year. I read that the seeds may be sterile. Anyone know for sure?
