Thanks, Scarlett. Yes, it's hard to figure out how wide the pathways are in your photos. Your garden looks beautiful. I just noticed that you have it irrigated, also.
Looks like we'll have to redesign. We only need to increase the space of the perimeter. It will be easier to enlarge the perimeter space than trying to keep ahead of the grasss and weeds all summer, every summer.
I guess it's difficult to put into perspective without a point of reference - like maybe a human in the photo.
The inside grass perimeter is about 4' wide - outside about 3-3.5'. So it's easy to mow with a push mower.
The center square gardening section is 12' x 12' which helps to put the other sections into perspective.
Our original plan was to have some type of pavers cover the grassy areas, but that was a few years ago. We're still not sure that is what we want to do.
Just an update on my SFG. Once again it looks very crowded, just like last year, lol. I think I trained my pole beans too tight and they are not producing as much as they could. My zucchini is finally starting to produce....it's a mottled leaf variety which I never heard of until I looked it up because I thought it was dideased...but it's not I am happy with my cucumbers which are growing up my netting. Here are some pictures.
My tomatoes are doing well this year
Beans and cukes kind of growing p the netting.
And a full view.
This is my second year of gardening and I already have more tweaking for next year's garden. I think it will be an ongoing learning experience.
I have been away since Thursday and come home to find everything going wild. The tomatoes that were pink are about ready to eat. YAY I think I have teeny beans coming on. I can hardly wait.
Yay! Lisa - Your garden is looking so productive. We ended up with early blight in our tomatoes and the county agricultural extension agent told us to mulch as soon as we set our plants out next year. We still had more tomatoes than last year, though. I'm going to attempt to can some.
Isn't the vertical growing cool, when the plants start up the trellis/netting?

Often you can remove them by clicking on the "Remove Text Formatting" button after you've pasted the text and it's still highlighted. The button is the first one on the heading bar, Two A's with a red X through them.
Hope that helps and best of luck with your garden!
I'm planning my garden for 2011 - has anyone grown butternut squash in a SF garden? If so, how many squares? Do you grow it vertically or just let it trail out of the garden bed?
I am from Raleigh, NC and let me tell you that the red clay is not very good for vegetable gardening. What I did was I followed the SQ FT gardening program and I have taken it to another two levels. The first being is that I built a cinder block raised vegetable garden 28" high 16' long and 5' wide. The second is, because I wanted to protect my investment I am building a 15x24 foot hoop house over it with a 6ply clear plastic in order to protect it from hail, wind, sun, deer, rabbits, and weeds. I am in the process of finishing this large undertaking. If you wish to get some ideas on how to get around the weather being in the wrong part of the country, go to the below YouTube videos I have posted. They are informative and I go through everything with regards to how I did what I did. They are how-to videos. Enjoy them.
