I do. right before the drought in Texas I harvested some heirloom tomatos, Red chard and Kale. right now everything is brown from no water.
You may want to try nopales. I'm from a dry island and we also eat them, but we call them "cassie." They're an edible cactus and they also have fruit. That way you may be able to get veggies even with the drought. In the US they're called prickly pear.

Just bought "the book" by Mel Bartholomew, hopefully it is a $19.99 well spent.
The method looks interesting enough so will be trying it out in the spring.
"Prep-ing" to grow more in less space (even though we have acres but I always like "compact" & close to the house idea better)...
Is anyone out there growing grains (wheat, rice, amaranth, etc) in their back yard, if so can you post a pic?
Ooh someone is reviving the thread already! I am in the process of picking seeds for the coming Spring/Summer. I saw a lot of cool new amaranth cultivars. I think you can eat the leaves of amaranth as a green as well as eating the seeds as a pseudo-grain.
I got my raised bed placed last weekend, and will probably fill it up this weekend. Planting starts about 3/15 here. I am starting small this year, but can add a second bed next year if it goes well.
Too bad I had already got my bed half full of topsoil before I got the book. I guess I'll just substitute the topsoil for the peat, and hope it works out.
Do you all actually use 1/3 vermiculite? It is really expensive. I might as well skip the gardening and go buy my veggies at Whole Foods.
