Homemade "Aqua Globe" or other self-watering devices (cut, planter, ground)

I need to make something to automatically water my container plants. Something similar to Aqua Globe. I recall seeing soda bottles filled with water and placed upside down in the dirt, however I don't recall seeing that they had the bottoms cut off like so many websites describe- what's the point? Won't it work to just invert a bottle of water into the planter? Perhaps drill a small hole in the cap in case no cap releases too much water.

I'd like to use the 16.9 oz water bottles (most descriptions I've found suggest using 2 liter bottles) because I want to put them in hanging baskets while I'm on vacation.

Any ideas?

I recall there being a sort of attachment that you screw on the opening, and insert that into the ground... you could probably google it and see what pops up. IF the opening for the bottles are the same, you could get that attachment meant for the 2LTr.

Harbor Freight - 6 attachments for about $5.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm going to check out Harbor Freight one day next week. for now, I drilled a hole in the cap of each bottle, filled with water and placed in each planter upside down. If that works, it may save me a trip and $5.
