Best stuff for Knockouts:

ColorStar 19-13-6

Only available online if you're not in Texas.

We have a couple of them that are 4-5 ft tall and we constantly have to prune them back. They really take off with this plant food. I use 2-3 tablespoons of food every 4-6 weeks. A 2 lb jar is about $10-15 and will last quite awhile.

We had rainbows at the store until this past weekend. Took over a month to sell 25 while the reds, pinks, and yellows flew off the tables. Nobody liked the color or the spindly growth habit. Looked too old fashioned, IMO. I can see why you wouldn't bother replacing it. They shouldn't have released it.
Yeah it seems like they are rushing out new hybrids to fast and to soon and are in a race. I have seen pictures of rainbow and was not impressed.

The grower that Lowe's here in NC uses claims that the White Outs aren't a hardy or disease resistant either. Too bad cause a lot of people have asked for them this summer. I wasn't even aware there was a white knockout.

I am not at all crazy about roses from Loews or a lot of their stock. Here is a link with a picture of the RadWhite Knock Out. I must say I am becoming happier with my new yellow Knockouts daily. The bud that came out today is a gorgeous yellow and is the first one to develop since I planted them this spring. As you know it is also cooler now than a few weeks ago and the flower better in cooler weather. The Yellows growth habitat seems to be different and more like a shrub as it is more dense.

Thanks. I can't really claim any credit for how well they're doing. The soil has a lot of clay--I amended it pretty well when I planted them, but I've not been good about fertilizing them since. Other than that I leave them alone. I throw my coffee grounds on them in the morning, that's about it. The only one I prune is the pink one that grows by the front steps. We have to prune it because it grows over the steps (and it got way too tall).

The amazing thing to me is how well they do in part shade. I've tried growing other roses, and found out the hard way my property's just too shady. But the knockouts seem to have a high shade tolerance.

We've had pretty mild winters since I planted them, it's possible that's a factor. I'm not sure they'll do as well after a really snowy cold winter.

Knockouts are actually bred to like clay soils. Too rich a soil is not good for them. They were built for the South.

Tuborg, it depends on which Lowe's you go to and how knowledgeable their Live Nursery Specialist is. It also depends on what greenhouse grows their roses. Ours come from Dewar's. We've gotten some from other suppliers that were just, well, terrible.

I will try to take some pictures of my knockouts in the front yard tomorrow when it is light again. We have a lot of clay in our yard and my two were planted in the fall of 2007. They are pretty big right now and have a lot of blooms on them. I do not spray them with anything but I do cut off all the spent flowers and I also poured some worm castings on them that my neighbor makes earlier this spring. They are very happy and what I love most is they bloom first, along with the english iris's (white & purple--may be called something else but they resemble english iris) so I have great color while the rest of my perennials are still growing --but also my knockout blooms last well into late fall.

Default Help with roses

I have plenty of blooms on my plants but the leaves are eaten alive by something. Even my knockout has some leaves that have been chewed up by something. I don't see any visible signs of insect infestation. Any idea what this is and how to treat it?

This is a funny thread. All us people with allergies have knockout roses and that's the reason we can't smell them.

I got mine last year (Lowes) and planted it in clay. I threw some top soil in the hole first. In April I trimmed it way small. No red blooms yet but it's growing like crazy. My tree rose only has a few baby leavres on it.
