The past week has been busy with canning, freezing, and dehydrating. We picked 3 lbs of green beans, two five gallon buckets of tomatoes, tons of peppers and jalepenos, lots of onions, leeks, and zen. I have been busy making sauce all day. Tomorrow we are making salsa, dehydrating some onion and freezing the rest. My dehydrator is full of thyme and oregano. I am afriad to see what needs to be picked in the morning.
Well there won't be much more picking for us. I tore out all the squash today, a few of the pepper plants and even one tomato plant. We will still see more tomatoes, but even they are suffering from insects and lack of water. Most of our friends have already torn their gardens out.\\\This certainly was not a a happy year.
Broccoli and red pear tomatoes, plus a ton of basil for making pesto.
I also foraged some wild yellow plums from a tree in the neighborhood. Apple trees are so heavily-laden with fruit that the boughs are practically laying on the ground. There's a place up the street that smells like applesauce because cars keep driving over fallen fruit. I've never seen so many apples! Besides applesauce, does anybody have suggestions for what to do with the bounty?
Ooo, fresh-picked limes and lemons sound delicious!
I don't have a veggie garden or fruit tree, but yesterday I cut some zinnias from my flower garden to have in a vase at work. Zinnias are my favorite flower!
Better late than never, I guess. I got more yellow tomatoes and some sort of red "pear" tomato, but it was diploid. I saved the seeds from some fancy tomatoes I got from wholefoods last year. So far, I haven't seen any of the cool purple ones... It's early autumn in these parts.
