Yes what I'm saying is try to emphasize the central trunk by starting at the ground and go up removing limbs which are too close to the ground. You may not even have any "close to the ground limbs". it is hard to tell but that would be my first move. If all that growth is from limbs say 3 to 4 feet up the central trunk then find a good V in the limbs to start removing growth. Then you can get more air to the entire tree. Try to cut back to a node-not just in the middle of a branch.

I think you have the general idea. Since mdvaden is a professional, perhaps he/she can put it into better words. I know how I would approach it but maybe I'm not explaining as well as mdvaden. I don't think you can do much harm as my story tells. And yes my maple was like as member of the family. I have to admit the last time it had to be moved I didn't have much hope but I literally laid hands and prayed for it and something worked.....
