My blue spruce's needles are brown near the trunk and green on the ends of the branches. I planted it in May of 2008, and it was all green until about a month ago. Any ideas?

Could be weather related. Evergreens tend to lose their inner needles under stress conditions. Those stress conditions can be anything from too much rain to too much drought.

Last year I planted a blue spruce that I bought at a good local nursery....it was a beautiful tree (Blue Boy)....it didnt make it! I had to dig it up this year.

In retrospect I didnt know my land yet and I put it in an area with clay soil and significant drainage problems...when I dug it up I could see that the root ball was pretty much rotten...it even smelled bad. So I did learn that location was wrong for the blue spruce.....I have another one that I bought as an "orphan" at the same nursery....a poor little mishapen specimen that looked rather like a bonsai tree.....it is futher up on a slope...still a bit wet but better.....It is doing very well....lots of new growth....a beautiful silvery blue color....(still odd shape...but growing and happy!)
