I need help from all of you garden gurus!

I'm looking to plant something along our fence that separates our yard from our neighbor. My kitchen window looks out onto this fence with their house right on the other side. There is probably only 10 feet or so between our house and the fence and I need to be able to walk between the house and the fence. I'm in Austin - I believe it's zone 8. Does anyone have any good suggestions on what might work here? I'm tired of looking at a blank wood fence and brick wall!

Thanks!

Sky pencil holly. Perfect size. Grows to about 10' tall, 2-3' wide. Never need shearing or pruning. In zone 8, plant in the fall and water consistently for at least a year til established. 1" of water per week.

Sky Pencil

I love the sky pencil hollies and considered using them in a spot similar to the OPs, but don't they grow really slowly? (I have to buy everything in small pots....because of cost and because I can't do a lot of heavy digging.)

Their growth rate is listed as moderate to fast by most publications. I take that to mean that it grows about a foot/year. Buying my first this fall. I want to create a wall against a neighbor's chainlink fence.

Must it be a tree? We had a similar situation at our last house, so I planted potato vine with the white flowers I grows like a weed out here (zone 8 I think) I'm in North SF Bay, Ca.

Potato vine (Solanum jasminoides)

It was easily trained up our 6 foot fence and grew up on top of itself another 3 feet above the fence, giving us plenty of room to move through that narrow part of the yard.

It is evergreen and it easily blocks the view across the top of the fence about 6-8 feet wide. Does more for privacy than a narrow tree, and it solves your blank fence problem as well.
