My neighbor just told me that it is not good to water the yard during the evenings, but early in the morning. Problem is that i work early in the mornings, so it looks like i will need a water timer hooked up so that it can water my grass when i leave for work. Can anyone recommend a good water timer that lasts and reliable(steel heads instead of plastic?)? I don't mind paying a bit more than the usual. Thanks.

For use with a hose, I have a Gilmour #9400 that has worked for at least ten years. FWIW, steel and water = rust.

The market is full with water timers, which do not cost a fortune and work quite well. You only need a simple model. Then you can replace it in a few years when it breaks
As for watering in the evenings, it can be done and I do it quite a lot. The problem is with plants like roses, which may develop black spot (fungus) on their leaves, if left wet overnight. However, if you water the plants 2-3 hours before dark, they have enough time to dry down.
The non recommended time for watering is midday, when the sun is high and temps above 85 deg. Adding water in these conditions can actually burn plants and grass.
