While he's on vacation, find some Round Up. Get some type of drill and drill to the center of the tree. Before drilling cut the bark off that area so you can cover the hole up. After drilling the hole, pour straight Round Up in the hole and cover with that piece of bark. Round Up will go straight to the roots and the tree will be dead in no time.
Neighbor of mine begged her landlord to cut down or trim back a big maple tree that was too close to the house. He refused. She learned that trick from a farmer. One O'clock in the morning, she is out on a ladder with one of those old hand drills cutting the hole. Her friendly farmer accidentally left some Round Up at her house. In less than a month the landlord had the dead tree cut down.
