Default trying my own seeds in an Aerogarden

Has anyone used their own seeds successfully in an aerogarden? I received one as a gift last winter, and I brought it back out this fall but of course, I now want to recycle the little cones with my own potting medium and seeds. My first two tries have been unsuccessful, just using light soil and 2009 seeds. (Spinach and basil, I think)

Does anyone have suggestions?
