You should be able to rent a stump grinder for about $150. If you have any demo skills and an understanding of how to keep your fingers, toes, limbs, head and body out of the way of the grinding wheel - you can DIY.

We just got done cleaning up the brush etc.. from the 11 Oaks we cut down this past January so now I am ready to start looking into Stump Grinding. I called our local rental place and they said it was $90 for 24 hours. Next weeks project, here I come.

I own a chain saw, and I think my grandsons and I could cut the stumps down to ground level ourselves. However, the tree guys sad that if we don't have the grinding process done the stumps will attract termites.

What do you guys think?
probably true, but likely not of much concern. In the southwest, you have termites anyhow! if they are muncing on the tree stump they will help it to degrade. If you percieve it as a problem, you can treat the stump and area. Sounds to me like they want the extra job of removing the stump.

Not sure if this is directed at me, but the chips would be shoveled into my wheelbarrow and straight to the fire pit.

I had a stumped grinded, still gets termites. When it's hot they dig themselves out to the surface.

Where I live stumps rot pretty quickly. I know it sounds gross, but the decay process will happen faster if you pour some urine over it about once a week. If you have a big dog let him pee on it, the nitrogen will feed the fungi.

Interesting thread. We're surrounded by woods, with rotting trees and tree stumps all around us. One of the stumps is 10' from the house, and been there 10+ years. We've never had termites.

In the southwestern U.S. Termites are common. Not so much in the northeast.

I didn't know that, I'll have to try it. We have to collect and spray urine around our yard anyway because it's the only thing that keeps away a fox that's been a problem. Might as well spray it on the stump.
