My front yard has sun most of the day and I want to put some color out there. It's a rental house, so I don't want to break the bank, but it's boring with typical bushes. Also want to put something colorful around the base of the mailbox, again, mostly sunny. Snapdragons didn't do too well last year.....
and many of these can easily be grown by seed. there are a few gardening forums where folks will send you seeds for postage. can't get much more economical than that.
Do you have a photo of your front yard? sometimes seeing the size of it will give us more ideas.
Zinnias are another great colorful plant. Various colors and sizes and easily grown by seed.
I love impatiens. They can be colorful and showy. One year before frost I brought the plants in. I used the bottom of an old humidifyer, vermiculite, and some rooting powder. I kept the vermiculite damp and when the cuttings started to grow I knew they had rooted so I transplanted them into pots. I had about 200 FLOWERING plants in winter. It was nice. I had plenty for the yard and to give away.

The info I read said that they would tolerate shade. They do best in "dappled" sunllight. It also said that they need sunlight to bloom and that if they weren't blooming well that they needed more sunlight. Mine were planted in an area that had late morning and afternoon sun and they did wonderfully. The soil should not be allowed to dry out (not sopping wet though) or they will wilt in afternoon heat.
I guess I should have given my location, I 'm in SC across the state line from Charlotte.
The only picture I have on this computer shows the snow from last year, right after I moved into the rental house. It does show the beds I want to add the color, with the boring bushes.
I also made a small bed around the base of the mailbox, at the street.
Roses do quite well with full sun. Some people say they are colorful, others say they smell really good.
