I started container gardening on a north-facing balcony last Summer. I had great success with cherry tomatoes, placing them up against the north-east wall, so they had sun on them from the north and west until sunset. I was very please with how they did.

I want to plant more veggies this Summer, but I obviously can't stack everything on the north-east wall. Some things are going to have to fill the rest of the balcony, which means they'll be in partial shade during the day.

What will grow well in partial shade? I'm thinking lettuce, spinach, but what else?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The majority of herbs will do well in partial shade, most of them you can grow on a windowsill. Herbs are for the most part weeds that are edible and taste good.

Swiss Chard, Arugula, Beets and Watercress are some examples of more expensive items (at the grocery) you can save on that will grow well in partial shade. Also more common items like Broccoli, Cauliflower (try the Golden or Purple Cauliflower!) and Peas. If you're a Radish fan like me (the French style are yummy), give them a whirl as you can usually get two full harvests out of one season.
