The flowers open near dark. They reseed readily as you can tell. They should start blooming here in the next couple of weeks. The flowers range from white to yellow, pink and red, and some are striped with several colors. They're fragrant at night. Don't yank them.
Another good thing about these plants, they kill Japanese Beetles. The bugs just love the foliage, but it's poisonous to them. So if you see them getting shredded, that's probably the reason, but let them be. They recover quickly. You can even chop them down and they'll regrow.
hahaha! That's actually funny. My well-meaning husband planted a hosta right in the middle of them and they are choking it out. He keeps wanting to pull them because "they're killing my hosta". Crazy fool. I told him not to plant the hosta there. Hilarious!
Thank you so much. So, I can move them pretty easily? I guess they will take over the world, huh?
don't move anything till winter. and the hosta will be just fine. I have some large sum and substance hosta completely covering a mouse ears variety and it's happy as can be. hosta like alot of shade and can tolerate some sun.
I can't help but think of the advice my grandpa gave me when I was a small child following him in his garden and asked how to tell the difference between a plant and a weed:

"Pull it, and if it grows back, it's a weed."
That's unfortunately not the case with Four O'clocks. They grow a tuber underground in warmer zones. Here, they reseed with a vengeance and they grow back from the tubers. I think the cold winter we had killed all my tubers, but there were plenty of seed on the ground. I have huge piles of these things popping up everywhere.
But for the most part, I absolutely agree with you. And if it flourishes, it's definitely a weed.
That's, I think, why my husband thought it was a weed. It's growing EVERYWHERE! I told him what you all said about it being a four o'clock. He thinks everyone is wrong and that it's a weed. I told him to wait a few weeks and we'll see if it blooms. He looked at me suspiciously but agreed. He's a funny guy!
Well, here is another person to say that it is definitely four o'clocks. I tried growing some once from seed....didn't take. Can you believe it?! I like them...they smell so good, and the multicolored ones are so pretty.
Just got my first one at a plant swap and then looked it up. Does sound weedlike in that it seems to spread and reproduce so easily!! Mine is still pretty small but I am hoping to see some flowers soon.
