I'm trying to find out information on my husbands greatgrand father. No family members are left to ask so am hoping to finish for my children. His name was David D. Shields (at least thats what the marriage notice said).
We think was born in Ohio around 1824-25. Have no idea who his family was. He married Elizabeth Burns in Hamilton, Ohio in 1854, she was born in Hamilton, Ohio in 1826. They had 4 children Marie (died at an early age) Jeanette, Emma and Andrew Jackson he was born 1860 in Mt Carmel, Il. We think girls were born in Iowa or Ohio in 1857-1859. I have Elizabeth a widow and the 3 children living in Cook county in 1880 with her sister. I have quite a bit of information on Elizabeth (except when and where she died), although I think she died in California. I also have a lot on Andrew. If anyone knows anything or any ideas how to further the search I would really appreciate it.

I'm assuming you've already tried Ancestry.com...? If not, you can get a 14-day free trial membership and check it out. In addition to all the records they have access to, there are also message boards where you can input surname(s) and ask questions, and maybe find someone else who has the info you seek.

I knew nothing further back than my grandparents at the time I joined, and to my surprise, before long I had been able to trace my mother's paternal line all the way back to the 14th century... and found out stuff about my heritage I'd never had a clue about. It was very rewarding, to say the least.

I understand the Mormon church also has tons of genealogical info available, although I've never used them.

Best of luck with your search.

Yes I am a member of ancestry and found information on Elizabeth and other families, since i don't know anything about David I don't know if I've found him or not. I can't connect him to Elizabeth. Oour mormon church has a geneaolgy available on saturdays, but still can't connect him.
Thank you for you help. I'm very frustrated.

Is that your family tree--Cook, Parish, Findlay and Krehbiel ? I believe the names of David D. Shields parents were on that family tree.

try the Mormon site. They offer a lot of information and it's free to get some of it. It's FamilySearch.org. Also if you have Ancestry.com don't forget to use the City Directories, sometimes they have the date of death and with that you, sometimes you can find an obituary. Obit's have a ton of info.
Good Luck!!

WOOPS I just noticed the date on this post! I hope that you have found tons of info by now!
