My step 2nd great grandfather is also an uncle, because his step daughter married his sister's son.

There's me to Daddy to Grandma Blanche to Great grandma Anna to Step Daddy James.

Anna married Charles. Charles' mother is Johanna, whose brother is James.

So James is also my 2nd great uncle?

This is clear as mud! But am I right?

I think James is your 3rd great uncle as well as being your (step) 2nd great grandfather.

I thought it out this way:
Your father's siblings are your aunts and uncles.
Your Grandmother Blanche's siblings are your great aunts and uncles (1st great).
Your Great Grandmother Anna's siblings and Great Grandfather Charles's siblings are great great aunts and uncles (2nd great).
Your Great Great Grandmother Johanna's siblings are great great great aunts and uncles (3rd great); thus Johanna's brother James is your 3rd great uncle.

Is that the right logic?

Have you heard that very old song, "I'm my own Grandpa"? Under the circumstances you might find it very funny.

Oh, yes -- the first time I heard it, the song was sung by a female country group... so it was I am my own grandma!
