Jefferson's a distant cousin of mine, as are both president Harrison's (and Martha Washington with this one). With Jefferson, the connection I can thoroughly document is in the 1500's; his ancestor was the sister of the man I'm descended from, though in the 1700's a cousin of mine also married into his family, but that one's a bit murky in the details of her connection to me, due to some records not surviving. With Martha and both Harrison's, the ties are in the 1600's through a sister of an ancestor (about half the family that came over stayed in New England, the rest sailed South to Virginia in the 1630's after a year there...).
My dear old ma has been doing her family tree for years now. anyway, our Buchanan side of my mums family first settled in county Armagh during the plantations settlement, thereafter some family members moved into County Tyrone. it's stated that (by my mother ) that her Great, great great grandfathers brother was the father of James Buchanan whom Emigrated in the late 1700's
Hey, maybe we are distantly related! Ya never know.
My mom's family is related to Richard Nixon. I think my great grandmother was a 2nd cousin several times removed. We have a Doan Family Association book that documents the connection.
I'm very, very old. My long interest in genetics led me to genealogy.
Many millions of Americans living today descend from early settlers of the colonies, those who arrived in the 1600s and early 1700s. Because there were such a small number of such colonists, and because their direct descendants inter-married creating several ancestral ties to any given
male and female living back then, most of their current-day descendants
are blood-cousins to millions of other living Americans. Every one has
"fancy kin" but they just don't know it. It is of no special significance to be a blood-cousin of famous people, whether they are living or dead, even though self-important snobs believe their blood-ties make them "better" than others.
I share blood ancestry with many, many famous European and American families and individuals. That fact is NO BIG DEAL! Jake Gyllenhaal and I are direct descendants of John "Lackland", King of England & his second wife, Isabel of Angouleme, and we are thus distant blood-cousins. Impressed? Don't be. That fact and 25 cents won't get me a cup of coffee. I have prepared a huge number of what are known as "pedigrees" which illustrate in a simple fashion my blood ties to renowned individuals over the centuries. Most of you reading this have ancestors of The Blood Royal. No...you will NEVER sit on the throne (except the one in your home). There actually is one key important factor in discovering one's prominent kin in that the genealogy of such people has already been completed. Thus the family historian has even more family lines to research.
The reader of this little message might question my credentials.
Since this is an anonymous posting I will reveal the following small and limited detail as to my background, a selected C/V, if you will. I'm HI IQ, member of MENSA & 3 other HI IQ societies, a multi-tasker & over- achiever, have had almost 500 organizational affiliations, have had a LOT of formal education (136 post-secondary courses completed at thirty-two providers, i.e., at four universities, six colleges, two finance institutes, one military school, i.e. thirteen primary providers, and at nineteen secondary providers), hold four degrees & I was formerly licensed by the State of Ohio. Long ago I enlisted in the Regular Army & served 467 days over two bitterly cold winters in GOD AWFUL Korea, 1956-58, having served a total of 6y 4m 7d & received an Honorable Discharge. I've been an officer/director/instructor/counselor/researcher/writer in five professional involvements (banking, government, education, mental health, & social services). I'm.active in politics and civic bodies once gaining 10,770 votes running as an Independentin a countywide election race in California. Once was an invited guest at a White House briefing on foreign & domestic affairs.
Given my interests, education, readings, and professional pursuits, years ago I came to the conclusion that genealogical research & genetic research should be combined. Why? In the very near future genetic CURATIVE modalities will REQUIRE that a particular genetic marker be obtained from an individual who is the blood-kin of a person seeking such a cure. If all of that ailing person's known near-kin lack the needed allele the search will need to be expanded greatly so as to locate some particular distant blood-cousin with that needed marker. Enter genealogical research and the results gained by such efforts. Not knowing one's distant kin will soon be a death sentence for those who lack such broader family information. A child or a grandchild will perish due to a failure to identify and locate one particular distant blood-cousin. Would you the reader want that on your conscience?
I finally decided to reveal my long held convictions in my discovery to a relevant audience. On 28 January 1997 I wrote paper on this topic. It was circulated to Dr. Francis Colllins and twelve additional key people in the United States, including other geneticists and editors/publishers of major genetic & genealogical journals and newsletters. My original ideas could have eventually benefitted a huge number of suffering adults and children had my original writing been acknowledged by the recipients of my paper and had my proposals been adopted and such knowledge spread wide. I was ignored. Today genetics and genealogy have been combined in Iceland! Americans have yet to catch up with the Icelanders. Perhaps some American recipient of my 1997 paper will advance my ideas as their own original discovery. That would come as no surprise to me as I have been plagiarized as to my writing on a non-related topic in a major Ohio daily newspaper.
All of that said and, you know what, other than writing I've enjoyed genealogical research most of all! Genealogy is challenging, makes one really use their intellect and imagination, leads one down many paths in multiple academic disciplines, makes one a first class detective, makes history come alive when you learn how major happenings over time ultimately led to your birth, and it is just plain FUN. Try it..it is NOT difficult.
Ancestral and blood-kinship information research which used to take YEARS to discover, and widespread travels, and visits to many libraries and multiple record depositories can now be gained by simply clicking your mouse on your computer on your desk at home. Now in less than a second that click can open up a wealth of data about one's personal genealogy and family history regarding the many surnames of one's huge number of direct ancestors.
I share blood-ancestry and am thus the blood-cousin to 26 Presidents (8th cousin-by-blood to President Obama) and to 17 wives of Presidents, 15 of whom were First Lady of the United States. I do believe that most of you who read this who discover your blood ties to the first Americans will also find that you are blood-cousin to more than one American President and/or First Lady. When you find that blood-tie to a President (not to a First Lady), and can document such ancestors-in-common with any President (such ancestors are known as propositi in hereditary societies), you are eligible for membership in Presidential Families of America (PFA), the first and original lineage society for the "Continuing First Families of the United States of America". A copy-cat society with a VERY long name was created years after the founding of PFA by "borrowing" the concepts originated by the PFA founder. I don't have space here for the entire lengthy name of that other lineage organization. See the PFA website for additional information regarding PFA membership.
President James Buchanon Jr. (1791-1868) had MANY ancestors with MANY different surnames so stop thinking in terms of the surname "Buchanon" only. Indeed, he has a great number of living Americans who are his blood-cousins. I'm one of them.
When you discover your fancy kin don't start walking around with a big
head like some foolish and misguided people, ya hear now! I hope this clarifies this subject for those who have interest. It is not my practise to "write down" to any individual or group of readers. I hope that the reader finds interest and value in what I have now posted at this site. If this discourse has been enlighting for some of you then my efforts have not been in vain. Happy ancestry quest!

Grover Cleavland but he is a cousin not a direct relative.
Also related to someone named Cook on the Mayflower but I am not sure how.
