Best answer from Yahoo!

Your cousin's child is your first cousin, once removed.

Your mother's cousin's child is your second cousin.

Your grandmother's cousin's child is your second cousin once removed. HER child is your third cousin.

Think of it as a ladder, that is very wide horizontally. There is a set of parents. They are the top level. Their children are the level below. Their children's children are the level below that. The first couples kids are all siblings. The siblings kids are first cousins, the next generation are third cousins. If you have two second cousins named George and James, James's kids are a rung below George, so they are George's second cousins once removed. Likewise George's kids are James's second cousins once removed. George's and James's kids are all at the same rung (or the same generation), so they are third cousins.

It's easier if you draw it out, but think of it as a ladder. Every member of that generation is on one rung. Anybody below that is a rung or more removed from the cousins above them. That's where the removed comes from.

It also has nothing to do with age, as first, second, third, and so forth cousins can be very different ages, but not removed. It all has to do with the generations.

I hope that helps.

Thanks alot... I will have to practice this to get it to stick. Here is a brain boggler for you and maybe you can help me some more. My great grandfather Adolf (zoologist) married to Elphege, who's mother is also Elphege's and married to Nicolas Jr. (musician) and her mother Eliza is 1st married to Lewis (musician/publisher) and second husband is Nicolas Sr, from Eliza's first husband there is a son named Lewis Henry and he has a daughter named Ethel and she has a son named Tyrone Power, Sr (actor) and is grandmother to Hollywood actor Tyrone Power 1930-1950... so I am trying to figure out Elphege's relationship to Tryrone Power ... 4th cousin (?)... I am referring to the Elphege married to Adolf??? My head hurts!

Forgot to mention that Eliza's second husband Nicholas Sr. is considered the finest violinist in Europe before Paganini came along. I think I am really confused now.

Your description is a bit confusing. After a bit of googling, it appears that Elphege is Nicolas Jr.'s daughter.

Elphege and Tyrone Power, Jr. are first cousins twice removed, I think.

You and Tyrone Power, Jr. are third cousins once removed.
