DNA is only truly valid if the father's line is direct. Mito is not really very useful.

The DNA won't lie. It just may take a chain saw to your tree if there was an adoption or an out of wedlock birth you didn't know about.

Admixture tests show the percentage of races in a person, nothing to do with Y chromosone or mitochondrial DNA.

Well, they came out of the English legal system, so it's mostly in the states that were the original colonies. I've seen a lot of the North Carolina ones, because they have been published. But I've seen them in New England states as well.

Who was posting the bond is always someone who should be looked at to be the father. That was common. Sometimes, too, the father might be the person to whom an illegitimate child was apprenticed.
