I'm trying to trace my Grandfather's family from Rangoon, Burma during the mid to late 1800's. Anyone have a resource?

This might help:

India Genealogy & Family History - Trace Your Ancestors From India | Bharat

British India Genealogy - Databases & Online Records for Research in British India

India Genealogy links - Indian geneology

Good Luck!

I don;t that site would be of much help. The best way to trace your lineage would be to take a trip to the area where your grandfather is from. Mnay families haved in certain areas for generations. They would be a better source of info.

Well, for starters, it's Burma, not India. Though some of the current resources are grouped together.

Best place to look for help and advice is probably at the Burma World GenWeb page.

I would guess that a lot of the records of that period might be in British archives, but ... that's just a guess.

Thanks! I have found a couple records on FamilySearch, but what is really throwing me off is that his last name waa Lawrence (born 1884). The further I go back, the more European names I find so Iím not sure if itís my grandfather. The first names of his mother/father are different from what I was told.

I watched a couple episodes of the BBC "Who Do You Think You Are" series on YouTube that traced ancestry from modern UK back to India. In both cases there was a Hindu priest/scholar, or Pandit, who maintained family records going back hundreds of years but it is in Sanscrit in some cases and recorded on cloth-like scrolls. You have to go find the family Pandit, wherever he is, and then read the scrolls. Somehow these records survived hundreds of years in chests or cabinets in spite of adverse conditions, invasions, wars and the partitioning of India and Pakistan. They are not online.
