I knew the neighborhood address where my great grandparents lived, but was disappointed that the Census skipped over them!! My mother confirmed the names of the immediate neighbors that appear on the census, but my ancestors were skipped. Has anyone else had this happen?
Are you looking at the 1940 census or a different one? If it's a searchable census (every one except 1940 at this point) then although it's rare, it's not unheard of. I am missing one person in the 1880 census and am missing a couple other families/ppl in some others.
If it's the 1940 census you're talking about, it's possible your great-grandparents were not at home at the time, and perhaps they were recorded later on, on a different sheet of paper. If that's the case you'll have to wait till it's searchable to easily find them.
Oh yes. I can't find my grandmother and her grandmother who raised her (they always lived together) in the 1910 census or Miracode. I even went page by page, searched relatives to see if the moved in with them.... can't find them
Yes, I have one family that is nowhere to be found in 1880 or 1900. Obviously, there isn't a 1890. Drives me nuts that I've only located them in 1870 and because of this, I've been unable to pin down a decent time frame for when they likely died. I've been at this a lot of years though and I've gone page-by-page looking for every possible spelling variation for their names. It is truly like they disappeared even though I know for a fact that the husband and wife died in the same county they were in 1870. But my best guesstimate is it happened between 1880 (the approximate year of their youngest child's birth) and 1910 (when that youngest child is located living on his own). And the state didn't begin recording deaths until 1919 - maddening!

I could only hope. They came out in every other census since 1900, but I could not find them in the 1940. The immediate neighbors were interviewed, but not my great grandparents. Is it possible that they were visiting some relatives in some other parts? I wonder how hard the census takers tried to backtrack to get any ppl that they might have missed?
And there are also the occasional duplicates to be found...
On the 1930 Census I couldn't initially find a Great Great Grandmother, although it was very defined where she would have lived. It kept troubling me to find an odd entry in California, some distance away, with a couple listing her as an Aunt. It was true, although I had to build the slightly-hidden familial relationship (and slightly misspelled surname of the couple) to line it up.
