Not up on how good the software is compared to others becsue I don't do genealogy but I have played around with this:

PhpGedView News - Online genealogy at its best

The software is free and the server will cost you about $5 to $10 a month. You can st this up as private as you want, for example the front page would be login screen/registration page. From there you would have to approve the registrant and set permissions. As I recall it saves revisions so any changes can always be backtracked.

If you're concerned about absolute privacy and control of the data this is the route to take as there is no third parties involved.

It will probably be a bit, I'm still going through what I have. And found I did a lot of notes on possible relations, looks like I wasted time there but that's the learning curve I guess.
I did join Ancestry and put up what I know I've researched and found some connections with cousins of cousins. And this is where I found the disadvantage in that some haven't been there in over a year. And I agree that its difficult for us all to be running FTM software, though it might be good for my own recording. Using facebook and the heritage one are looking better...as least for now till I can figure out the blog option.

Ancestry.com certainly has it's critics, but the World Membership is just a little over $200 per year. I have found so much info and made so many good connections over the past 2+ years I've had my membership, I would say it's easily worth it. I have found a ton of pictures of relatives and other info that would have simply been impossible if I didn't pay to have a membership there.
