My great-grandfather was very interested in politics and so am I. The diference is he was an active member of the Socialist party and I am ultra conservative.

Now I'm wondering which ancestors to attribute other qualities to.

This is an interesting thread. Some personality traits and other qualities have been shown to be more influenced by inherited genetics than others. Traits like extraversion, leadership, open mindedness, neurotic, general intelligence are found to be influenced more by inherited genetics than the environment ones grows up in. Other traits like agreeableness and ambition tend to be more influenced by our environment and experiences over time. Other traits like being timid seem to be a collection of several different genes as well as the environment.

A good article on this was printed in the NY times Dec 2, 1986: Major Personality Study Finds Traits Are Mostly Inherited, by Daniel Goleman.
Another paper is The Big Five Personality Traits: Genetic and inherited determinants of behavior by E. Scott Geller. Virginia Tech, 2005.

I definitely share some traits with family, especially my father's though I am not quite as extroverted. Intelligence is a prominent trait seen on both sides along with liberal social values--- oh, and stubbornness
